“I’ve thought about messaging you roughly once a month for two years and never did it. No reason, nothing happened — I just let it slide, and then it felt too late to pick back up.

Anyway. It isn’t too late, is it? I’d love to hear how you are. Coffee sometime this month, no agenda…”

this is the one people send first — it asks for nothing

The Research

They want to hear from you more than you think.

In a study of nearly 6,000 people, those who reached out consistently underestimated how glad the other person would be to hear from them.

And still, the message doesn’t get sent.

It’s been long enough that “hey” feels weird. Too long to pretend nothing happened. Not long enough to give up. So it sits in your head for another six months.

Think of one person you’d message if it weren’t so awkward.

What’s their first name?

Just a first name. It never leaves your screen.

How these are built

Anatomy of a message that gets answered.

One script from The Vanishing, taken apart.

This is years overdue and I’m sorry it took me this long.1 I’ve missed you.2 No pressure to reply quickly3 — I’d just love to know how you are.4
  1. Names the gap, once

One clause of acknowledgement, then it moves on. A second becomes an apology; a third becomes a burden they have to manage.

  2. Says the feeling plainly

Three words, no hedging and no joke to soften it. Plainness is what reads as sincerity at this length.

  3. Removes the obligation

The highest-leverage line in the whole message. People avoid replying when a reply feels like a task — this makes it easy, not optional.

  4. One ask, not two

A second question means the easy one gets answered and the real one quietly gets dropped.

You don’t need to become more outgoing, and you don’t need to work on yourself first. You need the first forty words.

 REVIEWS

From people who sent one.

“I changed three words, stared at it for ten minutes, and sent it. She replied before dinner.”
Sophia R.The Vanishing
“The apology felt direct without turning into a speech. We aren't suddenly best friends again, but we finally had the conversation we'd avoided for two years.”
Daniel K.The Rupture
“Useful and unusually specific. I wanted a few more examples for friendships that faded after someone moved, but the one I used sounded natural after a quick edit.”
Emma S.The Drift
“It got me past the blank screen.”
Alex T.The Vanishing
“I had six names in my notes app and no idea where to begin. The list helped me separate the people I missed from the people I only felt guilty about. I sent two messages that night.”
Jordan M.The Quiet List
“The scripts aren't magic, and one reply was polite rather than warm. Still, I was relieved to stop wondering what would happen if I reached out.”
Sam W.The Quiet List
